Frequently asked questions.
What can I expect?
Young Dancers Initiative is a supplemental dance experience for middle school and high school dancers who want more training! It is a space for young movers to connect with new peers and professionals in the dance community. An audition is required to join The Company, but NO AUDITION is necessary to enjoy our workshops and open classes!

Street parking is available near the studio (The Epic Center) or at the Epic Center Parking Ramp (about $5 for 1.5-2 hours) if you park in the ramp the first 90 min are free, and street parking is metered.
Does The Company compete?
The Company does not compete. Our main focus is personal growth and dance education in a non-competitive atmosphere where young dancers can engage with their community. Our Company members perform in an annual concert and travel to perform in various concert dance festivals in Michigan.
What is the difference between the company training track, the company performance track, and the mentorship?
In its simplest form, the Performance Track is tailored for dancers seeking more performance opportunities, while the Training Track caters to those desiring additional training and other educational dance opportunities. The Mentorship Track is designed for dancers who seek more educational guidance and mentoring. It is also beneficial for dancers with limited time to commit to the training or performance track or for those living far from the company location. A breakdown of each track can be found on our company page here.
Are there any requirements to be a part of The Company?
As a supplemental program, YDI requires company members to be enrolled in technique classes at a studio of their choice, taking at least 1-2 advanced ballet classes and 1-2 contemporary or modern classes weekly.
How is YDI involved in my community?
YDI provides creative movement workshops and performs at local nursing homes! YDI is currently a partner with the Boys and Girls Club of Kalamazoo, which offers weekly contemporary/modern creative movement classes to its members. If you are interested in YDI coming to you for creative movement workshops or performances, please contact us at info@youngdancersinitiative.org.
